Included Advice, Consultation and Research

Call your provider law firm for a consultation on business legal matters related to your business – including preexisting legal matters.

* Your provider law firm can also provide additional legal research for each matter you present. Interprovincial consultation is available.

* This does not include business legal matters covered under designated consultations.

Included Designated Consultation

Have a specific question? Receive up to three designated 30-minute telephone consultations on separate legal matters each year, in and outside your Province of business. A provider lawyer will answer questions about legal matters such as CRA tax issues, securities, intellectual property, immigration and more.

Included Letters or Phone Calls

A provider lawyer can provide further help with business legal matters by sending letters or making phone calls on behalf of your business for in-Province/in-territory business legal matters, each on a unique business matter, with 1 follow-up communication if a response is received from a third party. Receive any combination of 40 letters or phone calls annually on separate business legal matters (limit 10 per month). Additional communications may be obtained for a flat fee of $75 each. Collection Letters and Designated Consultations are not covered under this benefit.

Included Document Review

Business legal documents can be complex and confusing. Let your provider law firm help. Submit up to 40 business legal documents per year, up to 25 pages per document, for legal review (limit of 10 documents per month). Service covers both in and out-of-province legal matters. Additional reviews are available for a flat fee of $75 each.*Doesn’t include documents that are related to administrative proceedings and lawsuits.

Included Collection Letters

Late paying clients are an unavoidable part of business. Collection letters from a provider lawyey could help recoup payment. Your provider law firm will draft up to 15 collection letters each month. Service covers both in and out-of-province legal matters. Additional letters are available for a flat fee of $75 each.

Included Flat Fee Services

Save money by paying flat rates for certain legal services that could cost more by paying hourly rates.

  • Trademark and copyright services: 1 per year, additional available for $250
  • Employee handbooks: $500
  • Custom contract drafting of up to 25 pages: $250

*Filing fees, search fees, opinion letters or other expenses are paid by the member

Included CRA Audit Legal Services

Receive up to 50 hours of help from a provider lawyer in the event of a CRA audit, investigation or examination of your federal tax return. This service includes one initial hour of consultation and advice within the first 30 days of receiving notification from the CRA. Beginning on the 31st day, a provider lawyer provides 5 hours of representation or negotiation services prior to a lawsuit. Up to 44 hours of trial time or services are available If you are sued by the CRA or decide to sue the CRA after paying the disputed tax. Coverage for CRA legal services begins with a tax return filed in the same year as the effective date of the membership.

Included Interprovincial Services

Receive help with out-of-province business legal matters. Select services are provided anywhere within Canada, regardless of principle business location. All services for letters and phone calls, advice and consultation, document review, designated consultations and collection letters can used for matters outside of the province of your principal business. Small Business Legal Plans are not available in all provinces.

Included 25% Preferred Member Discount

If you have additional business legal needs beyond plan coverage, a provider lawyer can provide additional assistance under the 25% preferred member discount off of their standard hourly rate. This discount does not apply to the Designated Consultations section, contingency fee cases, or fees set by the court.

Upgrade Trial Defense

Sometimes, businesses run into legal issues and are named as a defendant in a lawsuit. A Small Business Trial Defence Supplement (“Supplement”) can be added to an active Small Business Pro or Small Business Plus membership. The Supplement offers 100 hours of trial defence services (25 hours of pre-trial time and 75 hours of trial time). Trial defence services include defence for covered lawsuits. Pre-trial time can be used for pre-trial conferences, depositions, motions, briefs and more.

Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. d/b/a LegalShield and PPL Legal Care of Canada Corporation d/b/a LegalShield (“LegalShield”) do not offer legal plans in Québec.  Legal plans for Québec residents are offered by NextGen CC&C Avocats Inc., a Québec law firm (“NextGen”), and are subject to the terms and conditions of the legal services contract with NextGen.  NextGen is managed by Québec lawyers, who are not agents or employees of LegalShield. Sales, marketing, and administration are provided by LegalShield. LegalShield independent associates provide marketing services for NextGen and applicable commissions will be paid through LegalShield.
